book review: Spin

Just finish the SF novel "Spin". interesting, readable, but not very excellent. Something profound and touching, but if criticizes it with a serious yardstick, many things, including the story and the motif, there are still a few obvious defects even faults in it.

The story is quite simple and the writer separates them into two parts which causes a motive for readers to eager to know what happened and the connection between the two parts. And the problem is if either of them cannot sustain the strength but was turned into a tasteless plot, this kind arrangement would weaken the novel. At the final he gives us nothing but the time flow recombination. If we re-read it again but put them into a single time axis—put the present part after the past part—and I don’t tell the huge different and dramatic effect except giving readers a puzzle of how it’s going to be like this —yes, I circle back the origin I just said, and here we got the key: the truth is, the plot of present time is just a passage of not-so-hard struggling to the new world result from a abrupt reason the writer gives us hastily in the last few pages: they are hunted by government who wants to withdraws back the high-classified information including the documents and their bodies by violence and murder, and all of this doesn’t astonish me much. Therefore, this flashback becomes a burdensome arrangement.

Despite the flashback, the story shows the excellent ability of the writer Robert Charles Wilson to tell a story. The clever work he made is to depict meticulously the world outside and inside the roles, and both are collapsing. He inserted each explosive incidents amid the whole progress in which he elaborated the mentalities of characters. So readers are dragged inside the story with the curiosity to know about the development of the mysterious Spin and its affections on people, the characters’ emotions.

However, it also displays the shortages, the framework is good but the details are not as well. Robert molded some vivid face of person in certain aspect but lack the other sides and cause people possess some part looks reality truly but some others are vague. Ex: E.D., the father of Jason, many words to portray and sometimes I glimpse something more complicated than he seems ought to be in some pages but to the end he is not out of a certain frame. Even the leading character Tyler, the words in him still lack of comprehensiveness. Besides, about the influence that Spin brings to people, in some sections the writer gave a great description about the chaos and the helpless people, and the most important, what Spin affects characters, Tyler, Jason, and Diane. But in some other small sections, he didn’t give a good reason in some subtleties for story logic. Especially there are some suspicious intentional simplifications for easy going. Ex: Sometimes I think it’s sort of unnatural that Jason told Tyler so much.

But I have to say Robert definitely owns the ability shape the characters into more reality because he has given a touching and impressive narrative in some parts like the love between Tyler and Diane. And it’s admirable that he puts so much effort to build a collapsing world and the people stepping to doomsday.

Though I criticize the incompleteness of characters and some odd fractional plots, I was moved by the interaction between the three people. Jason is a rationalist, and Diane is looking for her faith to confront the catastrophe. Tyler, sort of mind nothing but love, which is still hidden deep inside. Sometimes I think he’s unpleasant, cold and cynical, but on the other hand, he is objective and get used to the Spin very well. He expresses apparently his emotions in the last to save Diane’s life, and during the long way back to the origin, Big House, the plot is awesome, everything is collapsing, the Spin, the world, the civilization, as well as Simon’s faith, Jason’s life. At this part the stored energy about the fatal world and the lives since the Spin came is releasing.

I didn’t talk about the science in the novel because it’s no exceptional exciting ideas and I believe that’s not the motif. Neither do I mention philosophy because it’s not so profound to discuss too much, although the novel really has something to extract and discuss.

All in all, Robert made a good novel with some obvious defects which are following the excellence. And to improve it is the way to master. It’s a story with SF background and inducing some thought, but the main subject is about humanity. After all, the core of a novel is always about people, the other is supposed to background.

Donnie Darko review

What a amzing excellent horroe movie about a insane teenager's illusion,it's about irony of reality, sadness of the truth, inevitable fate, critism of hypocritical adults. It mentioned time travelling but it takes it as a raw to duscuss free will. The most important is it's still a story. Yes it has something interesting but it's never a lession.

But, it's still too weird for people. sadess, and darkness. I think probaly hard-core fan would like it. it's a cult movie.

Shutter Island review

"Shutter Island", made by Martin Scorsese, made some people disappointed due to its insufficient difficulties of puzzle. However, I don’t think the producer or director intend to make a suspense film but a plot with a puzzle to perform a man who is suffered by his past memory without any awareness. If he really wants to play a riddle game with audience, he has a lot of chances to bewilder us. The point is how it goes and what he shows along with the plot. I see the leading man: outstanding actor Leonardo Dicaprio shows how a patient lost himself in continued nightmare; I see a few excellent sections shows a good director’s skills to render a horror atmosphere; and the best is the ability to overlook total plot and made every line every word every move has its own function. Especially in the rear part, what appear in the front become clues to the truth. Nothing is wasted. It’s so CLEVER and I always found this kind of work in sophisticated directors, maybe it manifests sort of wisdom in veteran directing.

Although it doesn’t show obvious intention to deeper meanings, director still insert some meaningful line to give audience a glance of his ideology: please notice every conversation between insane Teddy (Dicaprio) and other persons, it’s about violence, of people, of institution, of Country, these dialogue is made elaborate.

The end is unexpected not due to the puzzle itself, as I said, it’s not hard, and director seems not intend to focus on this, the unexpectedness is rendered undramatically: Teddy seems leave his “cycle” and then director tells us he fails actually, but actually, he made choice. And it undoubtedly means, whatever this is reality or dream, true or fake, he decides to own the good and dies.

movie review

1.

just watch the movie "where the wild things are". never heard of about it but it's fantastic. It's a fairy tales about a boy who leaves home after a quarrel with his mom. it's more like a little sad even cruel story. he arrives the island meets some odd animals and becomes friends with them.

beneath child's fantasy with happiness and laugh is the uneasy atmosphere. it's not a truely happy story though they really have good time. i think the director made it be like this intentionally. I like the the music and the color tones of shot, apparently, for this idea, with gray amid light, depression in joyfulness.

2.

have just watched the "Salt", a popcorn movie but for me kind of movie fan it's not enough, just feel so so. The other one "from Paris with Love", is ok, especiallt after the last half, I like the director's rhythm, his always neglects useless things to focus on the main narrative and this is so great for a popcorn movie...Yeah~We just want fight, explosion, car-racing and blood! and ur job is provide these and arrange them into a seemingly rational story and it's not a easy job. in terms of skill, it's quite as hard as the others with academy awards...XD

3.

About Peter Berg: as some critics said: his style isn't out of Michael Mann especially in the movie "The kingdom" which is produced by Michael Mann. however, so far, i think the most suitable movie for him is the old movie "Friday night lights" which tells a small story about a school football team in a small town.

He is good to capture the emotion on common people faces by unfixed camera. He is used to make camera little unstable and unfocus shot initially and then concentrates after the shot on. It simulates the real process when we watch something.... Secondly, he is used to filter warm and light color to make the scene little cold and grey but he always emphasize some special color like white shining light. This make his movie a little gloomy. But i think all this is for he wanna intensify the roles' action in the film to move audience. embrace, kiss, weep, laugh....etc. But we can not ignore the music and dialog and a good actor's voice. So, this is his genre and his limit. Unless he is also the producer. I like his style, the pitcures are distante but the emotion still penetrates through the gloomy pictures, the light from the dark stadium in the remote town. That's the place he can elaborate his art.See more

Great director Ridley Scott

.

"Blade Runner".......THIS SF movie IS MY FAVORITE!!!!!! BD-remade edition was released at the same time which got high ranking. I Love so much the moist and dark city Ridley Scott built in the film and the cold atmosphere full of whole movie which is more like a over-industrial city to dead. Undoubtedlym the last line is the classical said by the stronrgest and smartest clone Roy after he saves Deckard's life with unclear reason.....

"Thelma & Louise" is classical especially in terms of female awakening, however, i would rather see it in the aspect from movie itself. it's quite a touching movie, any ideology extracted from ...it is the result from a excellent work, it's a premise.

"Black Rain" is also nice, you will see some similar cocept about what style he built the Japanese city. It refects that time in US the fear of Japanese economic power. And also it's completely a MAN movie. faith, friend, revenge...(and violence, blood, dirty words...yeah....)

The other classical SF movie made by Ridley is "Alien", not much budget (compare with the later 3 episodes), limited special effect, but sooooooo frighteningly....the fear of unknow from space...

"Gladiator" is also nice but for me it's more a commercial movie......i also like "Gladiator" and watched it many times because of it's well putting a hero's story in a great epic history. Nice balance, most importantly, he owns the skill to talk a story well, just skill, it's basic but somhow difficult for a director. Anyway, it's just comparison with his former achievements. He had made a lot of classical films....XD

塔吉克族則有八成把握;

Hannah
2010/11/09
Steve,

Lonely Planet

Steve

“Henry, I want to say sorry to you.”
“You just want to help, and you indeed help me a lot.”
*******

Steve

Gil,

“Ok….i will extinguish it…”
“I said, I will go out it…”

******

“Hannah, it’s time to say goodbye”

“maybe you can ask the bus to drop you in the border”她說

“no, the bus will not stop after crossing the checking point”我回答。

“......”

“take care” 我說

"...take care..."
"nice to meet you..."

Steve

“you are right, we should….”

他回答
“it doesn’t matter anymore, wrong or right, good or bad, you cannot expect”

Steve
“so where you gonna go next? Keep looking for somebody to share the taxi to the border?”

“no, I think I’ll go back Kashgar today”
“I don’t have to go to the border really, I am not so interested in it”

“So you just want to set Hannah off to Pakistan right?”
“......”

Hannah

Nicola
2010/10/26

“Nicola!”

Waiting to board

It's not convinent to go to airport from Hsinchu.

It's 11:00 now! Actually, I check-in at 10:00. ( I am too careful!)

Anyway, going by Highspeed rail and then transporting by bus only takes about 2 hours.

It's the fatest way.

Before Journey

No special reason why I take a trip to Japan. But I am sure that I need relax after almost whole year. Be in a different place, walking in a strange street, listening to foreign language…getting rid of familiar city, far away from office, in the place without the schematic figures, simulation plots, meetings, that is what I need. Japan is friendly to foreigners especially for us Taiwanese need not visa. And we know Taiwan has some kind of unusual emotion with Japan due to its past history.

However, I didn’t consider much to choose Japan for my trip. After made this decision, I started to plan the details. Like last year journey to Beijing, I would like to visit far resorts first and then tour around in city later.

富士五湖, called for the five lakes surround Fuji Mountain pronounced “Fujigoko” in Japanese, is the main resort of my trip. It locates far from Tokyo about 100km. It seems not as famous as other resorts in Kanto of Japan. That’s great for me who dislike crowds. I am going to visit there at middle November and wish to meet the red leaves. It’s the season that maple leaves start falling. I look forward to the beautiful scene at the side of the lake, or the hill near the lake, with Fuji Mountain. It must be wonderful. I wish the sky is clear during the days I stay.

Toyko doesn't attract me who do not love shopping. But one thing I google catch my eyes. Toden Arkawa Line, an old streetcar line in old Toyko. I am not a railway fan but I am interested in old stuffs. Maybe I will see a lot of differences others ignore.

Hope I'll have a nice journey.
